Books Luke Likes (5!)

In the midst of our crazy month with adding a baby to our family, we also have a big kid turning 5!  FIVE!  That seems so much older than 4, probably because of the looming kindergarten entrance.  In the most parent cliche, it's crazy that he's already that old while also crazy that he's only been around for 5 years.

We are getting SO close to finishing 1,000 (different) books by kindergarten and here are a few of his and my recent favorites!

Nothing Can Frighten a Bear by Elizabeth Dale

Luke absolutely loved this book, I'm not entirely sure why.  It was the rare random library grab that wasn't painful to read (and wasn't Star Wars or superheroes) so we went in with low expectations.  I thought the pictures were charming the story, of a bear family after a mysterious noise in the night, was well done.  Might be helpful for curing some of those late night fears kids seem to come up with!

Just Me and My Little Brother by Mercer Mayer
A friend sent this to Luke after Sam joined the family and Luke loved the story of Little Critter dreaming of all the things he would do with his new little brother, once he learned to walk!  Perfect for this time in our lives as Luke constantly tells us of the things he wants to do with his new little brother ("Will he be walking by my birthday?"  "In two days?  No.").

Old MacDonald Had a Dragon by Ken Baker
My sister recommended this one to us after her son really enjoyed it and Luke found it rather amusing too.  Old MacDonald not only had a farm, but also a dragon, who was kinda getting in the way of successful animal raising.  He thought it was hilarious.

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
When we went to an open house at Luke's future school, one of his possible teachers mentioned that they cover this book in kindergarten.  And since I'm always looking for more picture books (as if we really need more suggestions...see 900+ read) I put it on hold.  Chester Racoon is heading out into the world without his mother and needs a little reassurance.  It was cute and Luke has taken to giving me kisses on his hand often, which is just the sweetest.

The Digger and the Flower by Joseph Kuefler
A book that ties together heavy machinery (which appeals to my son) and caring for the environment (which appeals to me).  A win-win!  The pictures are well-done minimalist and the story charming without being too heavy.  It was cute.

Have YOU read any great (or even just good) picture books lately?
