Books Luke Likes - December (3 3/4)

Ending another quarter (I'm sure nobody notices that but me) with some of Luke's recent book favs.  As in, the ones we read and he won't let me return to the library right away and then continues to talk about even once they do have to go back.  I've been using Goodreads to keep track of all the books I do read him and it has been super helpful for remembering his favorites.  Or at least the ones I like enough to read to him multiple times!

1) The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot by Margaret McNamara and Mark Fearing
A take on the three little pigs but set in space with aliens and a robot.  Luke's been ALL ABOUT robots lately and still talks about a dream he had almost two weeks ago that featured a robot.  The robot blows up planets instead of knocking down houses - also something Luke really enjoys.  Basically, this plays to all his favorites right now.

2) Penguin Problems by Jory John and Lane Smith
This penguin has problems.  He's cold.  He doesn't like snow.  He is grouchy.  Then he remembers or is reminded that you can find joy and beauty even in less than ideal circumstances.  A good lesson for all of us.  I really appreciated that about this one!

3) Don't Touch This Book by Bill Cotter
A follow-up to Luke's beloved "Larry" book and one we waited FOREVER for the library to get.  (It's now in my gift stash for him...and on my spreadsheet.)  Larry doesn't want you to touch this book because it's his book and you have to do things like make noises and twirl around.  I like reading books to Luke but also like books that make him do more than be a passive listener.  I've read this one many times and still enjoy it.

4) Little Green Peas by Keith Baker
This one might be Luke's favorite in the "Peas" series - mainly for the "little green guys!" (ties in well with the aliens in book #1).  He generally knows all the main colors but we still enjoy reading this one with him and reinforcing them.  And the pictures are pretty clever and should give him a lot to look at and notice once he's a little more observant.

5) Robo-Sauce by Adam Rubin and Daniel Salmieri
This book is kinda a gimmick because at the end it turns into a robot - you turn pages into a new book cover and all of a sudden the book is a "robot" book.  I was actually a little amazed with it, even as I was doing it!  It's really just a boy playing make-believe which is something we are very familiar with around here and Luke still talks about it weeks later!  Perfect for any robot obsessed kids you might have.

Bonus:  Hello, My Name is Octicorn by Kevin Diller and Justin Lowe
An Octicorn is clearly the offspring of a octopus and a unicorn.  Don't think about it too much, it won't make sense.  He feels like he doesn't fit in anywhere because it's not all octopus or all unicorn but really, he just wants the same things as all other kids.

Switch out "friends" with "cousins" and that's pretty much Luke's wish list.  It made us laugh.

It seems like we always have a stack of library books around here for Luke (and me, still working through this stack) but always up for more suggestions/recommendations!  No such thing as too many books!
