Happy week of Christmas! A big part of our December (and life) is reading stacks of picture books, a process that ramps up quite a bit in December. Many of those are old favorites but there are quite a few (mostly the ones we own...which we own mostly because of hold line issues) that I've read MANY times in the past month. This book is heavy on the Christmas books because that's what been dominating my lap for the last month but a few others in here too!

Luke
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Luke's gotten really into these and I gather that they have more text than the DogMan books (which are still in heavy rotation which is great because one of those is wrapped under the tree, ordered before he got interested in Wimpy Kid). He may stay up too late reading these a lot of nights but we've also only had 2 bad mornings all school year so I guess he's going ok!
Paint with Sticker Book - Christmas
This was a part of their St. Nick gifts (as well as various other Christmas books I had bought from Thriftbooks) and Luke's really enjoyed doing these while I am reading aloud to them. They are above Sam's level right now and I'm glad Luke likes these. We had bought the zoo one for a road trip a few years ago and he only ever did 1½ of those but I guess these glitter stickers are more fun!
Who Loves Little Lemur? by Ann Whitford Paul, illustrated by Jay Fleck
We've read a lot of these "you are so loved by so many people" books that are especially prevelent as board books BUT then we stumbled upon this lemur one and it hasn't been returned to the library in months (it even survived my "I am overwhelmed by the 150 library books we have in the house and need to return everything that isn't Christmas" purge right before Thanksgiving!). ANY book that even slightly features lemurs is going to be a big hit with Luke.
What is Inside the Lincoln Memorial? by Martha E.H. Rustad, illustrated by Kyle Poling
Lincoln has long been Luke's favorite president (there was a period a few years ago where he's tell anyone that John Wilkes Booth was the worst person who ever lived) and so he's interested in the Lincoln Memorial (and we are MUCH MORE LIKELY to take him to see this than we are the Egyptian pyramids he's also interested in). I don't think we'll make that trip until Sam is a bit older so for now this was a good visual as to the Memorial!
Who Was King Tut? by Roberta Edwards, illustrated by True Kelley
Luke's current big interest is King Tut and the ancient Egyptians and when he gets to pick out books at the library they are often about one or both of those. This one is a bit over his reading level I think but he still really enjoys flipping through it and reading parts of it.
Sam
There was No Snow on Christmas Eve by Pam Munoz Ryan and illustrated by Dennis Nolan
This has been a HEAVY favorite of Sam's for 2 Christmases now. I don't know what it is about it, it's a very simple story (which doesn't rhyme and always throws me because we seem to always read this one after a rhyming book) about how it wasn't snowing on the night Jesus was born. I've read this one well over a dozen times just in the past month.
Red & Lulu by Matt Tavares
Sam's OTHER favorite Christmas book that is one of my all-time favorites too. Super charming story of 2 cardinals who are separated when their tree is cut down to be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Sam thinks every single red cardinal he sees is Red and any other small bird is Lulu.
Woodland Dance by Sandra Boynton
We don't read as much Sandra Boynton as we did a few years ago, Sam can handle longer books now, but we still do make a point to read her newest ones and this one stuck around for a few weeks, frequently popping up when I'd read to Sam. Then it got returned in my "too many books" return spree before Thanksgiving. Exactly what you'd expect from Sandra Boynton, animals having short, rhyming adventures!
My New Friend is So Fun by Mo Willems
Elephant and Piggie books are PERFECT for a quick "before quiet time" read and that's when we read these the most. We've accumulated all 25 over the course of a few years and I read one or two to Sam most days before his quiet time. I've read them each a dozen times, at least, and they are STILL delightful. Gold standard of early readers.
Creepy Pair of Underwear! by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated Peter Brown
I read this and Creepy Carrots! to Luke years ago but had forgotten all about them until my niece-in-law mentioned that her kids, who are around Sam's age, really liked them. So we got them again and both boys loved them. I don't know what it is about the idea of creep underwear that appeals to little boys but I had to read this one a lot of times.
Those are some books my boys are liking right now, by the time I do this next they will both have had birthdays! Crazy!
