Things I Like - February 2022

This is a very kid heavy favorites list this month but I guess that's where our attention has been!  Luckily we haven't been buying too much!

I always enjoy hearing what works for other people and I like sharing things I like, it's part of the reason I have a blog.  I've been doing these monthly posts for 9 years and they also provide a nice little snapshot in my life at a moment in time! 1) Shining Light Saints Memory
I cannot overstate enough how much of a favorite this is around here.  My sister, his godmother, got Sam the two men sets for Christmas.  It took a few weeks for Sam to get used to them but now we play MULTIPLE times a day.  I think yesterday alone I played 8 times.  We started just doing one deck at a time (26 cards) but now usually mix them together for 52 cards.  The most amazing part is HOW GOOD Sam is at this.  I routinely (but not always) get beat by him.  Given his proclivity for not putting his coat or shoes away, I didn't know his memory was this good!  Also, he can ID almost all the saints even without being able to read (there are some I get confused and I CAN read).  He might be (definitely) getting both women sets for his birthday.  This has been a very fun (when all 4 of us play together it gets VERY competitive) addition to our game closet (although it's rarely in the closet because we play so often).

2) Encanto
I firmly believe that Disney+ is the best bang for your bucks as far as streamers, if you have kids.  It's the one we use the most, for family movie night, the boys have been watching Duck Tails during their screentime, and Matt & I have been getting through the whole Marvel phase 4 (more on that coming).  This was the movie we picked to watch on New Years Eve and, as you've probably heard and/or seen yourself, it was a delight.  It doesn't take over from Moana as my favorite in the past decade or two but the soundtrack is catchy (I have 6 of the songs that the boys love to put on repeat) and the movie so colorful.  We all enjoyed it.

3) Luca
See, Disney+ is killing it.  This was our Christmas Day family movie (we used to buy a DVD as a "family gift" and watch that on Christmas but then all the ones we would probably buy are on Disney+...so we just pick from there) and the boys maybe even liked it more (although I am more inclined to musicals).  Two boys who are actually sea monsters but turn into humans when they are dry.  They want to live on land (cue The Little Mermaid although these boys got to keep their voices) and really want a Vespa.  This was also a lot of fun to watch!

4) True South Acadia Puzzle
I've long done puzzles over the winter but this year I've been much more serious about it than in years previous.  This is the puzzle I picked for Matt to get me for Valentines Day after buying their Classic Literary Locations puzzle at The Bookshelf last June.  I really liked the colors of that puzzle and was impressed with the quality so started searching their site for more.  This is the one I ended up picking although initially I had 6 puzzles (at $27 each) in my online shopping cart.  Acadia has been a place I've wanted to visit for awhile and I loved all the blue in this one.  They are only 500 pieces so pretty easy but both of them have been a joy to put together.  I'd definitely like to get more.

5) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Matt and I have been working through the Marvel phase 4 on Disney+ since Christmas.  We've liked most of them (and I've stayed awake for all of them!  Probably partially because I'm usually doing a puzzle while watching) but this might be my favorite of all the ones we watched so far?  I knew nothing about the story going in but it didn't take long to get the story and the whole thing felt very well done.  Also the special effects seemed very seamless but that might be because we recently watched Attack of the Clones with the boys and wow, computer graphics have gotten A LOT better in the last 20 years.  This did connect to some previous Marvel movies but it didn't require a lot of remembering of those to understand what was going on here.  Plus, the representation was nice, just like with Black Panther
