Books Luke Likes (5½)

I thought once Luke started school (kindergarten!) that we wouldn't be reading together as much any more.  BUT, since Sam goes to take nap #3 pretty soon after Luke is home from school, reading a stack of picture books is a great way to get some one on one time with Luke, as always.

I'm still fumbling around a bit with our afternoon/evening routine, figuring out how/when to spend time with just Luke between what Sam needs and tasks that just need taken care of like making supper and getting homework done.  BUT, the one that that has been working out is reading books together most afternoons.  Book are always the answer.

Here are 5 of Luke's recent favorites!

1) If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen
Luke found this book hilarious and we've read it many many times.  The little boy in the book is designing a car with crazy features like a pool and a snack bar.  It rhymes which makes for easy reading (I love a good rhyming book) and the pictures and ideas were just really clever.  We all enjoyed it.

2) Building Our House by Jonathan Bean
This is a picture book, based on the real life of the author, whose parents built there house mostly as depicted in the book.  It further convinced me that this is something I would never want to do but it was really interesting and charming to read about how they all worked together and brought in family and friends to help.

3) Incredibles 2 by Suzanne Francis
We took Luke (and Sam, but he slept through the whole thing) to the drive-in this summer to watch Incredibles 2.  Leaving the theater, I would have said Matt enjoyed the movie more than Luke.  But turns out, Luke REALLY liked this movie.  He's played Incredibles 2 (it has to be Incredibles 2, NOT Incredibles 1), he's drawn pictures of them, and he's talked about being Dash for Halloween (although there are about 5 other options he's mentioned too).  So of course we got this book from the library, renewed it many times and finally bought it.  I like the style of the pictures and it's certainly more bearable than movie book adaptations of kid movies I've read!

4) Do Not Lick this Book by Idan Ben-Barak
Luke has been interested in germs lately, maybe because we've been talking about washing hands much more with a baby around?  I'm not sure why but germs are almost a daily conversation topic and him and I both learned some things in this book all about germs.  It was educational and entertaining.

5) Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli
This is a really sweet book about Mr. Hatch, a lonely man with a predictable life who suddenly gets a box of chocolates in the mail with the note "Somebody loves you!".  This little gesture takes him by surprise and he pays it forward in many ways.  It's a really sweet story of reaching out and being friendly, important lessons I hope Luke remembers at school.

Have YOU read any good picture books lately?  I'm always looking for more worth reading!
