Things I Like - August 2022

I always enjoy hearing what works for other people and I like sharing things I like, it's part of the reason I have a blog.  I've been doing these monthly posts for 9 years and they also provide a nice little snapshot in my life at a moment in time! See more here!  Some affiliate links may be included!

Things happened and I missed getting one of these posted by the end of the month for the first time in nearly 10 years.  COVID finally got us and got us good, messed up the last 2 weeks of the month, which I am sure I will talk about more when I get to the August recap post.  There is a whole back log of posts I intend to write (and just in general life things I'd like to catch up on!) but this is the start!

1) A New Day - Sal heels
Starting with something that is still actually in stock and I just wore!  One of Matt's (many) nephews got married over Labor Day weekend with a "cocktail attire" dress code suggestion.   I had THREE (it took me awhile to realize I had any) possible warmer weather cocktail dresses but I didn't have proper shoes.  I used to have shoes but, for some reason (one pair was because they killed my feet), didn't have any open toed black heels.  These are the ones I got (on sale, naturally) and I was surprised at how comfortable they were!  Really, not too bad for the first many hours I was wearing them.  I would NOT recommend for approximately 10 hours straight, including many hours dancing and being on your feet (which is what I ended up doing) but...the first 5ish hours of being up and down...they worked great.  Which is really more than I can say for about any pair of heels I own!  (I have the black matte in my normal size.)

2) Charcoal Air Purifying Bags
Our washing machine came with our house and it wasn't new then.  Matt's had to fix a few parts here and there but it has held up rather well for 16+ years.  However, over the summer it developed a smell that we could not get rid of.  And it made our clothes smell too.  I ran cleaning cycles through it.  Matt tore it all apart and cleaned parts that hadn't seen the light of day since it was made.  It still smelled.  Then I bought a set of these bags after Sherry at Young House Love (there is no internet stranger that influences me more) had talked about them many times.  I put three of them around the open washer between loads.  That FINALLY got rid of the smell.  I haven't had to "charge" them back in the sun yet but apparently that's all you have to do every couple months.  I love an easy and relatively cheap solution to a stinky problem!

3) Stranger Things season 4
We FINALLY got to watching the newest season of Stranger Things AND it's holding my attention!  Matt watched all or most of the 1st season without me and then I finally heard enough people talking about it that I got curious and he restarted it with me.  It's still the scariest thing I watch but I love the 80s nostalgia and the kids (who grew A LOT between season 3 and 4 due to COVID delays).   I haven't been doing puzzles over the summer because there has just been too much going on and yet, I STILL stay awake for these episodes which is really saying something.  We're only about half way through and I feel like it expects me to remember more of the earlier seasons than I do but we're still enjoying it, even though the episodes are getting super long (they are 2 hours each by the end of the season!).

4) Discovery+
Somehow, our cell phone plan is giving us a free trial of Discovery+.  There is one benefit to this.  Discovery+ includes House Hunters which I love but we rarely get to watch.  And I don't need to watch it all the time.  It's the perfect treat to dip in and out of on vacation and/or when we can get the occasional episode at home.  The 20 minute episodes are perfect when we don't have a lot of time or, even better, when we need a non-scary chaser to Stranger Things.  We don't always have time for one but I appreciate yelling at people's house shopping before going to bed instead of being scared of Vecna.

5) Out of stock Target sandals
My every day flip-flops were dying a slow death and were threatening to fall apart some day on the walk to school pick-up.  I was influenced by my sister to try Birkenstocks even though I got the Target knock-off versions.  I bought these and then a month later hadn't decided yet if I wanted to keep them BUT they went on sale for 40% off so I took my pair in, returned them (they still had the tags on and hadn't been worn more than 10 seconds) and rebought them 30 seconds later for 40% off.  I then wore them constantly on our Michigan trip and decided I liked them.  I especially like that they have a bit of a platform because it kept my feet a bit more out of the dirt and rocks at our campsite.  Of course, they were $15 and Matt's already had to glue them.  BUT...I still wear them a lot.  I am wearing them right now.  AND I can wear them with socks which I don't usually do but when we are camping and I need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and sleep with socks on but don't want to walk around in my socks...I can just put on my sandals.  Works in hotel rooms for the same purpose!  (Some colors might be in stock but the tan I bought are not, last I looked.)

I also bought these regular flip-flops that are also comfortable and replace my old water flip-flops that were a carryover from a sister's wedding 10 years ago.  These look a little nicer than my old pair so, say, when we go back to Jellystone next summer I can wear these to the pool, the showers, AND to church which would cut a pair of shoes I'd need to take!  I wore them on the Grand Haven beach in Michigan and to the pool on two camping trips.  They work very well for that I needed them to do!

What have YOU been liking lately?
