Christmas Picture Book Flight - Cookies & Treats

As I've said many times, just in the last few weeks but also, always, I LOVE all things about Christmas.  One thing that really helps myself and my boys distinguish and mark all the different seasons and holidays we celebrate is by reading seasonally set picture book.  So, naturally, we read A LOT of Christmas books.  I wrote about my multi-step process here (I was very honored and one of the librarians at our branch told me I was a profession after hearing that I had a system and that I had written it down.).  As I write this right before Thanksgiving, we are in full "crazy Christmas picture book" mode with somewhere around 110 Christmas picture books checked out, zero of which we've read recently.  SO, naturally, I have some titles to share.

Last December I started doing Christmas picture book flights, with Christmas Trees, Animals Celebrating, Santa Stories, and The Nativity Story.  I don't know how many more flights I can figure out but we at least have one for today!  A lovely and much anticipated part of our Christmas celebrating is making, decorating, and eating Christmas cookies and treats.  So here are a few books about Christmas cookies and treats.

Tough Cookie: A Christmas Story by Edward Hemingway
What do you do when you are a Christmas cookie, in the land of Holiday Treats nonetheless, AND YOU DON'T TASTE GOOD?  Well, honestly, that would save you from being eaten and that sounds pretty good to me and maybe there is a lesson about self-acceptance in a story about a cookie that doesn't taste good.

A Homemade Together Christmas by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
This isn't so much about cookies as it about food as a gift and I personally wouldn't mind someone making me a meal as a gift.  This family of pigs decides they will all make homemade gifts and from my memory...they decide this pretty close to Christmas (I get a bit panicky just thinking about that).  BUT while this big tries to figure out his gift, his Momma is making a nice breakfast for all.

Catch that Cookie! by Hallie Durand, illustrated by David Small
A class of kids are making cookies at school (I am positive nothing quite that festive happens at my son's school) and Marshall just can't wait to eat his gingerbread man.  Until his gingerbread man runs away.  You know, as cookies tend to do (maybe this magical land where they make cookies at school is also where cookies come alive.)

The Legend of the Candy Cane by Lori Walburg, illustrated by Richard Cowdrey
A small prairie town has a stranger ride in on a November night and many people are hoping it's the answer to their wish.  The adults have practical wishes, the kids are hoping for a candy store.  They are right and also learn about the history of the candy cane and how it's based on the Nativity story.

The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray, illustrated by Mike Lowery
Again, a class is baking cookies at school and this time they leave behind their just-baked gingerbread man when they have somewhere else to be.  Well, this isn't acceptable to the gingerbread man and he runs all over the school to look for his class, meeting many of the usual cast of a school along the way.

The Christmas Feast by Nathalie Dargent, illustrated by Magali Le Huche
Wolf, Weasel, and Fox steal a turkey for their Christmas meal but the Turkey doesn't really want to be eaten and has a whole lot of stalling techiniques, they need to DECORATE before they can eat him!  And then the more time the other animals spend with Turkey the less they want to make him a part of their holiday meal.

The Gift of the Christmas Cookie: Sharing the True Meaning of Jesus' Birth by Dandi Daley Mackall, illustrated by Deborah Chabrian
Growing up I had learned a bit about the story behind the candy cane but I had never heard anything about the legend behind the Christmas Cookie before I read this book to the boys.  And Jack in this story learns it too, as he helps his Mom make cookies Jack would really like for himself but they are giving to those less fortunate.

The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher by Robert Kraus, illustrated by Virgil Franklin Partch
This is an old book and has such lovely vintage illustrations!  I know my sister passed it onto me but I don't know where she came up with it.  Anyways, there is a Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snatcher and there is looming disaster where cookies might not get their sprinkles.  DISASTER.

If you have any more Christmas cookie/treat/food picture books I'd love to hear about them!
