Simplifying Allowances

One of my weekly Saturday chores is paying the boys' their allowances.  It was on my 20 in 2020 list to start paying Luke an allowance, which we did with some regularity but then fell out of the habit, although I was accruing an "allowances payable" for him in my financial software so that we would at least know how many he was missing.   It took until about 6 months ago, well into 2021, that we really got in a good routine for paying allowances and now Sam gets one too!

Teaching our boys good money habits is one of many things we want to instill in them.  If they don't have money to spend as kids, they'll make more money mistakes when they are older when the stakes are higher.  Plus, I really don't want to them constantly asking me to buy them things at Target or wherever.  Now the answer is simple.  I am not buying that for them besides as, maybe, a future gift, but they can spend their own money, if they have any to spend. (We will pay for things for them in store since they rarely take their wallets on our regular shopping trips, but only if I know they have enough back home to pay me back immediately.  And then I make them pay me back before they get said item.)

A big reason they never got paid on time is that I never had the right bills or coins on me.  So that needed fixed.  Our bank, where us and the boys have accounts, does a pays for A's program where Luke can get $5 if he has an A (or equivalent, when he was on O's and S's until this school year) on his report card.  Now I had a reason to go to the bank every quarter.  And that is the 4 times a year I go to the bank.  When we got the school calendar I wrote the 4 report card dates in my planner and that is when we go.  Any checks I get myself wait until then. (I suppose if we got a large enough check, like when Matt's work has reimbursed us for work trips, I'd go sooner...but we haven't had that in years.)

Before those roughly quarterly bank trips I count out how many weekends there are until we'll be going again.  I multiply that by what I pay out in allowance a week and that is how much I withdraw from our account in $1s.  I also might get a roll of quarters and/or dimes to help make the change I need for their allowance splitting.

We have been pretty consistent over the past 6 months to pay allowances on Saturday afternoons.  I want them to have their church envelopes ready for when we go to Saturday night or Sunday morning Mass.  But as much as I wanted them to have their envelopes I was also usually dragging my feet because I was pulling items from about 4 different spots in the house.  I kept the allowance money in one place, their church envelopes in another, their piggy banks and savings bags in a third, and their wallets in a fourth.  This was crazy and annoying.

What matters?

Teaching them good money habits.

What else matters?

Making it easy to do weekly.

I had really helped that along with getting the right cash from the bank so I finally realized I could put almost all the allowance items in one place for easy grabbing when it was time to pay.  Here's where I ended up!  We have both of their piggy banks (where they mostly keep change (they, strangely, have almost matching banks.  One being mine from childhood and the other one they got as a baby.)), their wallets (where they mostly keep bills), their shared box of church envelopes, their savings bags, and the money I use to pay.  It gives me a weird sense of joy to have a good system for this now, something that has been annoying me for months!

Right now they each give 10% to church and put 50% into their savings account.  This means they keep a whole 40% of their actual allowance (which is the same system my parents used when I was growing up!) but it still keeps them with a weekly stream of cash.  They each have a labeled bag for savings money and we take those to the bank on our quarterly trips.  They've only deposited the bills so far so we don't have to mess with their little bit of change in the change counter.  Plus, we are constantly using that to make change so it usually amounts to under 50 cents anyways.

Now on those Saturday afternoons I can just grab the whole box and have them paid out within minutes.  Luke knows how to count and make basic change.  Sam doesn't yet but he's slowly learning a bit more!

The boys, mainly Luke, can earn more by doing extra chores like mowing (he LOVES mowing) or shoveling (loves that too) but we try not to tie their allowance directly to their normal chores.  Chores are part of living here and we all have to work together to keep the house clean and functioning.  Their allowance is part of learning about money.  I don't know how well they understand that separation but we try!

If you are looking for guidance on this I highly recommend this book, The Opposite of Spoiled: Raising Kids Who are Grounded, Generous, and Smart about Money by Ron Lieber.  Even getting a pretty good financial education from my parents AND being a professional accountant, I still learned a lot about how to teach my kids about money!

I still remember the pride and joy I felt as a kid when I had finally saved up my hard earned allowance for something I really wanted.  It felt so grown-up to have my own spending money.  And I see that in my kids too, then they are able to make their own purchases.  It's teaching them about savings and choosing carefully and also just the basics of counting money!  And I get less whining at the store for random purchases which, really, might be the real win of it all!

Do you pay your kids allowances?  I'd love to hear what kind of system, I just find others' processes so interesting!

My FabFitFun Experience

Subscription boxes aren't really my thing.  Or I didn't think they were my thing even though I had never tried one until recently.  I am always aiming to buy intentionally and have less in my house.  I am somewhat resistant to spending money.  The idea of paying a set amount of money for things I might not need or want seemed a little ridiculous.

But I also like getting mail.  I get excited to get packages even when I picked out and paid for them (it is incredibly rare that we get any other kind of package).  Most packages I open excitedly and then remember "oh...this is what I ordered for myself."  I remember a lot of things but what is arriving in packages seems to completely slip my mind once I hit "place order".

FabFitFun (this is not sponsored, they are welcome to send me free boxes!) is one company I've heard of for awhile.  I think they have been a sponsor on the Popcast (back before I started skipping all ads in podcasts, sorry, not sorry as the kids say).  People seemed to like the stuff they got from them.  So when I saw a deal to get a $50 box for $20 I was tempted enough that I placed an order.  Another podcast had also been talking a few days earlier about a magical blanket someone had gotten through their box.  Do we need another blanket?  Absolutely not.  But I was intrigued (spoiler alert: I didn't pick the blanket).

I knew very little about what came in these boxes before I did this, other than general beauty things.  I made an account and went through all the steps.  Then I got to do some customizing.  I was able to pick among 5-6 items two different times.  So they showed me 5-6 items and I got to pick one (this is when I picked something else over the blanket).  Then showed me 5-6 completely different items and I got to pick one.

This may have happened a third time?  I'm not entirely sure.  I wasn't thinking about blogging about the experience when I was doing it.

Then they asked me some questions about products I like and what I might use.  Like somewhere I said yes to being interested in jewelry but not earrings since I don't have pierced ears.  I said I wasn't interested in many beauty products since I have been battling so many skin problems on my face for 2 years.  I had finally found a mascara I really like and then had to stop using it because of my skin allergies.  That was a real loss.

I think it was mid-January when I placed my order.

Mid-February my box arrived.  I had checked the tracking more times than I care to admit.  I was very excited.  But not too excited because then I didn't open it for over a week.  There were a few nagging tasks I had been putting off for too long that I told myself I had to get done first.  Then I wanted to open it when I had some time to myself but Sam's precious naps are getting shorter and there is a lot I try to pack into that time (including too much time on my phone but that's a post for another day).

I finally opened it in late February while finishing The Notebook.

It was really exciting to open a box where I had no idea what was inside but I also didn't have to fake reactions for a gift giver.  There were 8 items.  The booklet that came with it valued my total at $265.00.  I had paid $19.50.  That seems like a great deal!  But would I have ever paid $265 for these 8 items?

No, I wouldn't have.

Here's what I got for my $20:

1) The Lilly Pulitzer mugs are very pretty although more purple in person than showed in the picture.  That is one of the items I picked.  Do we need more mugs?  No, we do not.  But they are pretty even though I don't think I can microwave them (to warm up my water for tea) because of the gold on the handle which adds a step to my tea making.

2) There was a Vera Bradley "compact organizer" which is the other item I picked.  I felt a slight obligation since Very Bradley is from here and I certainly have a few (more than a few) of their items.  I'm not sure what I will use this for and it's in about my least favorite color.  I wish it was more pink because I can't get myself too excited about this purple.

3) There was an eye shadow palette which I hear a lot of people talking about on the internet (not this specific one, just in general) that I will at least try.

4) The one item I have actually used is the hair mask.  I've been using that once or twice a week in the shower and it does make my hair feel very smooth in the shower although I can't say I've noticed a difference once I am out.

5) I was excited about the "daily facial dry brush" because I love some good exfoliating but then my dermatologist told me I shouldn't exfoliate because of my psoriasis soooo...I used that once or twice before she told me that and now it's just sitting by my make-up.

6) There is a dry shampoo powder I should try because I do like NOT washing my hair but I haven't yet.  I have a homemade version I used more when I straightened my hair but I rarely do that now so I haven't used dry shampoo in a few years.

7) I have NO IDEA what the "croc card case is".  I guess to fit in credit or ID cards?  But I have a little (Vera Bradley) change purse I use for that when I am using a smaller purse so I don't need another, although I do like the color.

8) And then liquid eyeliner which I will try but haven't yet.

So there you go, 8 products worth $265 that I spent $20 on and so far, almost a month in, have used one.

Was it worth $20?

Yes, I don't regret it for $20 and getting to try something new.  Maybe another one of the items will be a hit and then it will be doubly worth it but even if I just keep using the hair mask it was worth $20.  I immediately canceled my subscription (before my box even arrived) because I didn't want to pay $50 for a next one.  I don't need a box of surprise items sent to my house quarterly.  Some of these will probably end up in a donate box within a few months.

But it was a fun experiment.  I'll try a few new things and maybe something will stick!

Spring/Summer Shopping List 2020

I had originally planned to write this post a month ago, when the calendar says it turned to spring but then it was still really cold!  I had zero motivation to think about spring or summer clothes when I still needed many layers to stay warm!  But now we've had some nice weather and, while I've only worn shorts to run, steady spring weather is on the horizon.  I haven't thought about my clothes a whole lot but I have started buying a few things so I better set some parameters for what I am looking for!

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, links for which are included within this post, at no additional cost to you.  Thanks for helping support this blog!

First off, starting with what I planned and actually did buy in the fall and winter:

1) Cognac Booties
I bought the ones pictured from Target and wore them much more then I expected to!  The opening around the ankle is pretty loose on me but I've gotten used to them.  They aren't a super high quality and the stripes on the heel are wearing off a little but I doubt many people are looking that close at my shoes.  I expect these will last at least a couple falls/winters and then I can replace them with a higher quality pair.

2) Another pair of skinny jeans
I did not buy these except maybe an identical pair to one of the pairs of jeans I already owned (the ones I am wearing right now, honestly) since I like them and I'll want a replacement when they wear out.  But that doesn't really count and I got through the winter fine with just two pairs of blue jeans!

3) 2ish Sweaters/Tops
I bought more than 2 but I'm including here a Gibson twist-top I bought in TWO colors from Nordstrom and a sweatshirt I bought from Old Navy that I got in the habit of wearing every Monday for awhile.

4) Long-Sleeved Dress
I bought this one from Amazon to wear to be our niece's confirmation sponsor in the fall!  I've worn it then and to be godmother to a friend's baby over the winter...and that's it!  BUT I got compliments on it both times and I was glad to have a long-sleeved dress for both occasions!  I don't wear many dresses in the cold months because I rarely have an occasion for them so I expect this will be my go-to for awhile!
5) Navy Utility Jacket
I had already bought this one on Amazon before I made my list and I did keep it.  I'm going to want everything in blue and I've already worn it again this spring!  I like it.

Besides a couple direct replacement items, I only bought 2 extra things this winter!  I like making these lists partially just to see how much better I've gotten at shopping.  I had 19 extra items on my first check-in back in the fall of 2016 and now I'm down to 2.  So I've gotten better at making lists of items that I actually need/want, sticking to them, and just shopping less in general!

I bought a second color of the Nordstrom Gibson twist-top front top above as well as a sweater from Macy's that is no longer online.  Apparently I have a color scheme for my extra items.

Now, all that I plan to buy until fall!

1) Coral/peach hoodie
I've bought this one from Amazon as well as a possibility from Old Navy and have to figure out which to keep.  And then figure out how I can return the others with Corona closing/restrictions.  I'm assuming stores are extending return windows with everything going on.

2) A sundress
It's been a few years since I've bought a new one and another option would be appreciated for going to church in the summer (assuming we get to go to church this summer!)

3) Fun Flats
I bought a couple pairs of these last fall and the ones I bought hurt my feet SO MUCH for the few minutes I tried them on at home that my feet still hurt when I see the picture of them in my Amazon purchases (I returned them).  SO PAINFUL.  I'd still like a pair of flats that has NO grey in them, which the ones I wear the most both do.

4) Navy Blue Striped v or scooped neck short sleeved tee
I had one of these that I really liked a few (6) years ago and wore often, then it wore out.  I bought a replacement last spring from ThredUp that I kept but then didn't like how it fit so I'm on the hunt again.

5) 2ish Tank Tops/T-shirts
I didn't buy many last year but it's always nice to have a couple new items for a new season.  I looked back and I bought literally NO CLOTHES in June, July, and August last year, not even replacements (besides a replacement sports bra for running) I did really well with my shopping!

6) A Star Wars t-shirt
The rest of my family owns (multiple) Star Wars shirts, since I've borrowed one of Matt's twice in the past 6 months, I thought maybe it's time I bought my own.  I wore one to see The Rise of Skywalker with Matt in December and then Luke wanted us all to wear Star Wars for his recent quarantined birthday.  It was one of his requests we could actually meet!

7) Something to use up ThredUp credit
I used to shop at ThredUp a lot.  Now I shop there a lot less because I just haven't been finding enough to fill my cart and then paying to restock items makes me want to try things less.  But I have $35 in credit there that I've had for awhile and I'd like to use it up before they convert it to an e-gift card, which they sent an e-mail and said they are going to do.  SO, I need to get back to browsing there.  Preferably, using it up to buy something from this list.

That's a longer shopping list than I usually have but maybe I'll end up not buying some of it anyways!  I've either done a good job of building up my wardrobe where I don't want/need as much OR I just have less time/energy for shopping.  I suspect it's a little of both!  I always like making these and thinking about my buying habits intentionally but it was also really nice thinking about something "normal" in the midst of a lot of not-normal!

The Best Target Black Friday Deal

As you may know, Black Friday is next week.  Also Thanksgiving.  I love the whole Thanksgiving long weekend.  We catch up on sleep (ideally), see family, I eat my body mass in mashed potatoes, and I decorate for Christmas (I have STRONG feelings about Christmas trees being up before Thanksgiving.  And down before New Years).

We've never been big Black Friday shoppers but we will be shopping over the weekend.  And by BIG I mean we don't go to a whole lot of stores and every shopping trip we make is in daylight.  We do most of our Black Friday shopping online where you can often get the same deals as in store but get to be in yoga pants and warm.  We've done the wait in line once, back when Target opened at Midnight still.  I think we were trying to get a PlayStation 3.  My husband waited in line at Game Stop, my sister and I waited at Target.  It was actually a lot of fun and pretty cold but fun.  We did get the PS3 and it is still the DVD/blu-ray player we use today.  But that is the only time we have ever been at a store when they opened for Black Friday shopping (this is OBVIOUSLY pre-kids).

The last couple years I've gotten to do a solo Black Friday shopping trip to Target which is my favorite Target shopping trip of the year.  Did you see the SOLO.  That is crucial.  It's likely the only time I get to go to Target alone all year and get to do some browsing and just soaking up the holiday good cheer.  I actually only go in Target store about once a month anymore and that's usually just to get waffles (Sam LOVES a toaster waffle and we LOVE having a breakfast he will consistently eat).  I'm a huge fan of the Target drive-up orders.

Anyways.  I've looked at the Target Black Friday ad but I was really only looking for one thing.  The "spend $50 on Black Friday and get a 20% off coupon for a future trip (between certain dates)"

They've been doing this for at least 6 years and it is my favorite and, in my opinion, the BEST Target Black Friday deal.  I go to Target on Black Friday (which I am going to do anyways).  I spend $50 (which I can easily do - last year I bought liquid bandaid and food for a family gathering and diapers).  Then get a 20% off coupon.

The two years (including last year) we've had babies on formula, I've used that 20% off trip to buy all the rest of the formula the boys would need until they turned 1.  If you've had experience buying formula you know what a huge money saver that can be! (Unless you over estimate how much formula you'll need and a year later you are gifting a canister to your baby nephew.  Not that I am speaking from experience...but I am.)

But even the years we haven't had a baby on formula, I've gotten plenty of savings out of this deal, savings more than the $50 I had to spend (on things I needed anyways) to get it.

I use the 20% to generally finish up my Christmas shopping with stocking stuffers, teacher presents, and other things on my list I hold for this.  I also use it to stock up on all sorts of household items that rarely go on sale (at least rarely 20% off) - dish soap, hand soap, tissues, dark chocolate chips, my favorite tea, hot cider mix, Sam's beloved waffles, canned soup (I really do love some canned soup, great lunch in a pinch), travel packs of baby wipes, parchment paper, body wash for all, etc.  I rarely manage to buy enough of these items to last the whole year but it gives me a decent start for at least a couple months, especially on items we use a lot of, like tissues and hand soap.

Bonus, I can place a $50 online order on Black Friday, a $50 in store purchase, and get TWO 20% coupons that I can't stack, but that I can use for two different shopping trips.  It's always handy to have a back-up!  Or to best stack the 20% off on whatever Target has on sale that week.

(There are all sorts of things that are excluded from the 20% off but the only one that I really mind is Legos.  Why do Legos so rarely go on sale???)

I don't love a lot of things about Black Friday - the materialism and how it's slowly taking over Thanksgiving.  We are rarely in it for the BIG deals (although, we are looking at iPhone deals this year because ours are 4 years old and the battery life is basically non-existent but they are also completely paid off and I hate giving up the cheap cell phone bill BUT...not charging my phone multiple times a day would also be nice).  BUT, buying things I am going to be buying anyways in order to a coupon to buy more things I am going to be buying anyways but at a discount, is exactly what I am looking for out of my Black Friday shopping.

That, and my solo shopping trip where nobody will beg me to look at the Legos (but I will probably look at them anyways) and nobody will decide in the back of the store that they need to go to the bathroom and nobody will need a diaper change, I won't have to nag anyone to keep up or stay awake or stay out of my purse, and I can browse the Christmas decorations to my hearts content!  It is my favorite Target shopping trip of the year, and not just because I am saving money.

Are you a Black Friday shopper?  Where do you shop?  Do you dream of solo shopping trips too?

Fall 2019/Winter 2020 Shopping List

I was starting to look at some additions to my closet for the fall when I kept wondering what I had put on my list so I knew what I should be looking for.  I pride myself in a pretty decent memory but it wasn't until I checked my own blog archives TWICE that I was sure that I had never wrote this post.  I was really convinced that I did!  So then I started wondering what the heck I was looking for for fall/winter instead of just buying whatever fashion bloggers (really, Audrey at PMT) recommended.

First, looking back at how I did for the spring/summer.  Shocking myself, I bought ZERO clothing items in June, July, or August.  Literally zero, not even any replacement items.  I don't know if it was solely a time thing (I don't have much time for even online shopping when Luke is out of school and what "free" time I get I probably want to be reading or running.  And I really hate trying clothes on, even at home.) or money (letting my allowance build back up).  But I just didn't shop and it was all fine!  I had plenty of clothes to wear and there really wasn't anything I wanted.

(I guess I DID buy a new sports bra but that was a replacement item and comes from a different budget line so it really doesn't count here.  But that is the sole clothing item I bought in those three months.)

Almost all of these things I bought I already owned when I made this list.

1) Navy Wedges
I bought these from J. Crew and I'm so excited I finally have them after SO MANY YEAR of being on my list.  I'll probably wear them a few more times before we're in solid boot weather.

2) Floral Top
This was a J. Crew via ThredUp purchase.  Wore it quite a few times to church and work (both instances with a jacket on top).

3) 3ish Short Sleeved Tees
Stripes were both ThredUp purchases, middle I bought from J.Crew (Factory) itself.  Really, I didn't need another blue tee...but now I have one.

4) Fun Flats
I actually just bought these in October and then the 7.5 seems to big so I just bought a size 7 to see if it's better.   Bonus, the size 7 is $5 cheaper.

5) 2ish Tank Tops
I didn't buy any and it was fine!  Nice to know that what I had was enough!

6) Joggers
I bought these on Amazon and I'm pretty happy with them!  I wear them to lounge around the house in the evenings and they are a nice "it's too cold for shorts but I'm not ready for leggings yet" in between for sleeping too.

The ONLY item I bought not on this list was a pair of Universal Thread cut-offs that the Target site calls "shorties" but I definitely don't feel like they are super short.  I wore them often in the summer even if I got annoyed when the threads at the bottom got bent all over the place.

Now, a plan for the fall/winter.

1) Cognac Booties
I have a grey-ish/tan pair and a black pair but I really like my cognac riding boots and I think I'd wear cognac booties often.  I bought these from Target and tried them on but haven't really tried them out around home yet.  They do have a decent amount of cushion in them for being from Target!  My window to wear booties isn't long so I'm fine with ones much cheaper than my (constantly worn) riding boots.

2) Another pair of skinny jeans
Why is it so hard to find a pair of jeans that fits well?  Right now I have 3 pairs of blue skinny jeans.  One distressed (my favorite but distressed isn't always appropriate), one dark (that I am wearing right now), and a medium wash that isn't my favorite (they twist weird when I walk, the ones I talk about back here).  I'd like at least one more pair that I actually really like.  I have a pair in my closet waiting to be tried on...I just haven't yet.

3) 2ish Sweaters/Tops
It's just inevitable plus I've already bought one.

4) Long-Sleeved Dress
I have been contemplating this dress from Amazon but haven't yet hit the "place order" button.  I'm not sure why, probably just majorly procrastinating trying it on!  And I hate figuring out sizes from new-to-me brands.

5) Navy Utility Jacket
I don't really have a need for this other than the handful of times I am wearing my olive green jeans and can't wear my olive green utility jacket with them.  But I never needed much of a reason to want to buy ANYTHING in blue so I have this ordered, we'll see if I keep it. (I'm going to get good at returning things to Amazon quick!).
__________________________________________

That's it!  Shockingly, this list contains NOTHING I have already bought from ThredUp which might be a first.  Also, even a couple months ago I wouldn't have expected so much of my clothes to be coming from Amazon.

Hopefully this helps keep me in check with my shopping, especially around Black Friday!  I appreciate how making these lists help hold me accountable to what holes I have in my closet and what would best fill those.  I honestly felt a little lost shopping these last couple weeks without knowing what I am really looking for.  My list of items bought "off list" have shrunk from TWENTY to just ONE.  So, it's really been helpful both money wise and in time spent/not spent shopping.  Not to mention not having an over flowing closet!  All good things.

Spring/Summer 2019 Shopping List

I almost forgot about this post this spring!  Usually giving up discretionary spending for Lent has me itching to spend money and planning to spend money as soon as Easter hits.  I don't know what was different about this year but I didn't have quite the itch.  Which is why this post is a month later than usual (I'm sure everyone noticed).  So my spring/summer shopping list is really more a summer shopping list and I may have already purchased about half the items on the list.  Maybe that shopping itch just manifested itself into warmer weather clothes.

I still buy a decent amount of my clothes from ThredUp but placing fewer orders than in the past.  I wrote a whole post about them a couple years ago.  I am very pleased with some things I've bought there!

First up, reviewing what I planned to buy for last fall/winter:

1) Fun Flats
I did not buy these although they might be showing up on my spring list again.

2) Tan Sweater
Thank you, ThredUp.

3) 2ish Colored Sweaters

I did buy two sweaters, this Old Navy one from ThredUp and then another Old Navy one from Old Navy.  I really like Old Navy sweaters, they usually hold up for frequent wear over many seasons!  But I don't have a picture of the other because Old Navy doesn't keep all their product pictures on their website indefinitely like ThredUp does.  Just imagine a sweater...there you go.

4) 2ish Long Sleeved Tees
I am counting 3 as 2ish.  These are all from ThredUp and I even wore the one in the middle today! (Today as I am writing this, prayers it's too warm for a long sleeve tee when this posts in 2 weeks!)

5) Another Pair of Old Navy Rockstars

I bought these and also wore them today! (Again, the today I am writing, not posting.)  I really like Old Navy Rockstars too.  There is a lot of cheap clothes at Old Navy but jeans and sweaters (and puffer vests) have (mostly) all been good to me.

6) Christmas Dress
I forgot all about this one until right before Christmas.  I didn't buy one!  And, again, I have no pictures of myself on Christmas Eve so I'm not even sure what I wore!

What else did I buy?

Cutting out direct replacement items (which was two items), I only bought TWO things.  I am overly proud of this.  Jeans which I turned out to not be overly fond of (which is why I wore them to the drive-in, didn't care so much if they got muddy) and a J. Crew long sleeved tee I actually bought from J. Crew, not ThredUp.

I have gotten SO MUCH BETTER at shopping less. (I am very proud of this.)

Spring/Summer 2019 Plan

1) Navy Wedges
They've been on my list for YEARS AND....I FINALLY GOT THEM.  From J. Crew.  I am really excited about these.  Less excited about the blisters they gave me when I first wore them.

2) Floral Top
I bought this one, J. Crew via ThredUp.

3) 3ish Short Sleeved Tees
I have really got to stop buying these, I already purchased all 3 shown, two of them last fall (I wore one in Vegas) which really means they should go on my "extra" items list but I am putting them here.  I have a solid collection of short sleeved tees I like so I need to be done buying these until some get worn out.  Not all my short sleeved tees are blue striped...but these all are.  I have a type.

4) Fun Flats
Now I am thinking coral ones and have some I am considering on Amazon (I seem to be incapable of spending much more than $20 on flats).  But I like the idea of having "fun" flats on days I wear a striped top (since I can't mix my striped flats with my striped tops...I own a lot of stripes).

5) 2ish Tank Tops
I wear these a lot in the summer when the weather cooperates and it's nice to add a couple to my collection ever year.  I have not purchased these yet, shocking.

6) Joggers
I put these on my list last year and then didn't find any.  I'm trying again with cropped joggers and bought these on Amazon but have yet to try them on (I procrastinate doing this for weeks).  We'll see if they are what I've had in mind!
__________________________________________________________
That's it!  Which since I bought over half this list already means I shouldn't be shopping much this summer!  Which would be nice, maybe mostly because I procrastinate trying things on FOREVER so not having that nagging task in the back of my mind is a relief!  Also sticking to a budget and not overfilling my closet and all those other things I like to write about.  Just good all around!

Fall 2018/Winter 2019 Shopping Post

It's really hard to think about fall/winter clothes at the moment because, as I write this, it is a heat index 91° and I've been mostly in the AC for the past 3 days.  Besides leaving to do the school run in the morning, when it's still cool, and sweating through the school run in the afternoon, when it is definitely not.  But I have thought a little, little, about what I'd like to add to my closet for the someday, upcoming, cooler weather.  Spoiler: it includes sweaters.  Always sweaters.

First, looking back at how I did with my spring/summer shopping list from back here.

1) Navy wedges
Eternally on my list until I can find them in my price range.  No luck yet, three years running.

2) Grey/silver flats
I may have already had these when I wrote that post but these were a straight replacement for an identical pair that was, and still is, wearing out.  And I've still be wearing the not quite but almost worn out pair more because they are broken in and much more comfortable.  But they won't last much longer.  Mad Love Lydia Loafers

3) Grey Joggers
These were a maybe.  Bought some from Old Navy, didn't like them, returned, and then forgot to look for more.  Maybe a maybe again but not pressing.

4) Denim Jacket

I said I might buy this one from Old Navy and I did and I kept it and have worn it!  Mostly to work where they blast the AC because I don't have many other places to wear a jacket in the summer since we most definitely do NOT blast our AC at home.

5) 2ish t-shirts

5 is "2ish", right?  All ThredUp, among my most frequently worn tees this summer so that worked out.  I may have a thing for blue stripes.  And one of them even got it's own post I wore it so often.  Both ends are J Crew and I liked them so much I just went down a rabbit hole of looking for more J Crew tees on ThredUp which ended with my finding out they max your cart at 25 items.  Who knew?  (Also, I definitely won't be buying all of those.)

6) 2ish tank tops
3 is definitely 2ish.  Again, all ThredUp. I wore one of these when I started writing this post and another as I'm finishing it (the next day).

7) A Sundress
I bought this from ThredUp but it's a little big and so I need to have the straps shortened just a bit and need to decide if that is worth it for a dress I didn't spend much on.  I've held onto it this long I should at least look into it.

8) Everyday Skinny Jeans
I had a pair of these Levi 535 Jeggings from 4ish years ago and I wore those suckers out.  Still wear them at the lake when it's chilly even though they are missing a large portion of the knees.  I liked them so much that I bought a replacement pair on Amazon but I don't think I like this pair as much as my original ones.  I wore them a few days in New York and a scattering of days since (the weather hasn't allowed for many more) so I haven't gotten a ton of use from them yet but it is nice to have non-distressed jeans for Saturday evening church or just times I don't want holey jeans.  But they aren't my favorites.
________________________________________________

As for the things I didn't plan to buy, I've decided I'm not longer counting straight replacements because I get to make the rules.  I did have to replace my sunglasses (in New York!) and every day flip-flops when both my long owned and plenty worn items were done.  Otherwise, I was down to 4.  FOUR!  I was around 20 when I started making these lists and now I actually stick to them!

For fall 2018 - winter 2019, I haven't given it a ton of thought because, again, it's been hot here and just the thought of wearing sweaters is making me sweat.  But here is my list:

1) Fun Flats

I have grey/silver, grey/white striped, black, and navy but I would like a "fun" pair.  I almost bought these dv Addie slides from Target this summer but didn't but I keep thinking about them.  I'd like that color and fabric in a flat.  Or something else not a neutral.  I'm unsure where I will find these but since I wear flats for much of the spring and fall, they could get a lot of use.

2) Tan Sweater

I had one I really liked 2 years ago but it shrunk and I haven't figured out how to fix that and/or found a good replacement.  I'm on the hunt again.

3) 2ish Colored Sweaters

I realized last winter that my favorite sweaters were my colored ones - specifically blue or green.  I'd like to get a few more since that's what I like to wear the most.  Probably, again, shades of blue or green.  Just ordered some possibilities from ThredUp.

4) 2ish Long Sleeved Tees

I wear these a lot in the summer and some of my original Target ones don't fit as well as I'd like.

5) Another Pair of Old Navy Rockstars

I have two pairs of Old Navy Rockstars and I really like both of them, for different reasons.  I'd like to try another pair.  So sale stalking.  Also, when I find something I like I want to buy multiples so this is right on track for me.

6) Christmas Dress

I wore a dress last year for Christmas Eve Mass but I have absolutely no idea what one because there is not a single picture of me from that evening.  Ones of my husband and Luke, yes.  But not me.  So I doubt anyone else remembers what I wore but I think I would like a new dress for Christmas.  Or at least I'll look for one.

I think that's it?  This is the season I've put the least amount of thought into it since I started this plan so it's all subject to change.  Also, I filled the list with things I'm likely going to buy anyways.  SOOO...I finally figured out how to win at not "over" shopping.  We'll see what happens after Black Friday shopping.  Is it too soon to start looking for those ads?  Don't worry, I've already started Christmas shopping.

Spring/Summer 2018 Clothes List

Through all my years of blogging and the hundreds of posts I've written, I've learned that I like the internet holding me accountable.  Or apps holding me accountable.  I need something to hold me accountable.  This is often our budget but it's also nice knowing I'll be checking in here twice a year and admitting what I've bought, how many items I've gone over.  I have been getting slightly better every season!  I know nobody really cares if I go over BUT...it helps me manage my shopping!

Also, with my semi-blogging break these last 2 months, I've realized how much I like writing!  Baby tending takes more time than I remember (or maybe it's also parenting the other kid along with a baby) and life has gotten a little crazy.  I don't have the time to write that I did for many years but I do always enjoy it once I get back to it!

I do a lot of shopping on ThredUp and will be mentioning it often, my original post about it back here!

As, always with these lists, first checking in with how I did on my fall/winter list!

1) Grey Jeans
I bought so many pairs of these (ok, maybe 3) and looked on the internet so many times (because I buy about 5% of my clothes in store) and never found good options, at least in my price range.   Light enough grey to not be black.  Good fit.  Not black on the inside (which was my problem with the Old Navy Rockstars, couldn't roll them!).  I'd especially like grey jeans to wear with all my navy tops in the winter (since white jeans don't seem practical with all the snow and slush).  I'll be keeping my eye out.

2) Tan Sweater
I bought one on impulse 18 months ago that I really liked.  Then it shrunk (Old Navy problems).  I did buy one that I pictured in my fall post...then ended up selling it back to ThredUp (I've done that to too many items in the past year...like 5).  So, this one didn't work out either!

3) Grey Sweater

Making up for the first two strike outs by doubling up on this one!  First one is Madewell from ThredUp which I wore a few times but not my ideal for every day (I do still have it).  Second is Old Navy and I wore it almost weekly, still in rotation with this cold spring!

4) Black, closed-toe heels

Bought these from Target and they are comfortable (for heels) and I wore them about as much as I could wear heels in the winter (so, like twice).  First talked about them back here, happy with this purchase.

5) Stretchy Jeans
A replacement item for my everyday winter jeans that I can wear leggings under.  These are from Target, a version of the same ones that wore out on me (after a lot of wear over 3 years, and I still wear the originals-worn-out-in-the-knees around home).

6) 2ish Sweaters

Three is 2ish, right??  These are all ThredUp.  The two blue ones are different blue ones.  I've been wearing A LOT of sweaters the last couple months, have definitely gotten my money worth out of these.

NOW...

Down to 6!!  I'm doing so much better!

Cable-Knit Bootie Slippers | Target cable-knit sweater |  Denizen from Levi black jeans
Old Navy LOVE sweatshirt | leopard flats | Green Banana Republic dress (ThredUp)

The slippers have gotten almost daily wear this winter (more here).  I've talked fondly of that LOVE sweatshirt already (here).  Black jeans to wear with leggings like the regular ones above.  And the green dress was for Sam's baptism, something we didn't expect to be happening and I think warranted a new dress!

NOW, spring/summer 2018!

1) Navy wedges
Might be the third time they've been on my list and I have YET to find any in my price range.  They will be here until I do!

2) Grey/silver flats
My current pair gets A LOT of wear, especially in the spring and fall and they are really showing it.  They need replaced.

3) Grey Joggers
Maybe.  I've seen fashion bloggers style these for nicer wear but, really, I just want some lazy pants for cooler summer evenings when I don't quite need yoga pants but shorts aren't enough.  These have been sitting in my Old Navy cart for awhile, waiting for a sale.

4) Denim Jacket
Again, maybe.  I think I am at least convinced to try one.  Also have an Old Navy one sitting in my cart.

5) 2ish t-shirts

Because this is what I wear a lot in the summer.  Already bought this J. Crew one from ThredUp.

6) 2ish tank tops
Because this is what I wear a lot in the summer when it's actually hot.  Already bought this J. Crew one from ThredUp too.

7) A Sundress
Also ready bought this (ThredUp, of course).  You may notice I've been on a blue streak lately...and also my whole life.

8) Everyday Skinny Jeans

I really don't like having separate summer and winter (can fit leggings under them) jeans but I also really like staying warm in the winter.  I want my everyday skinnies to be long enough to roll and I have a distressed pair I really like but I don't always want distressed.  So a new pair of skinnies, long enough to roll, no holes.  (I have an option being delivered tomorrow!)

That's all I plan to buy for this spring/summer!  A longer list than usual (I think I average about 6 planned items).  We'll see how well I stick to it!  I do really like making these lists (which also live on the notes app on my phone).  It helps me stick to what I "need" to fill closet holes or remember items I think need replaced.

I'm obviously not perfect at sticking to it but they have really helped me cut down the impulse shopping.  Plus, I always appreciate a review back at what I did buy over the last ~6 months and how those items worked out!  Slowly helping me perfect my shopping!

What about you?  Do you keep a list and (kinda) stick to it?  What clothes items are you looking at for spring/summer?
